Marijuana: The Gateway Plant to Urban Farming

How do you build a radical black farm in the middle of East Oakland? With a bold vision, an activist family, and the help of one small, stimulating green plant.

Movement Generation is excited to release our new video following the amazing, true-life story of Full Harvest Farm. Featuring the Full Harvest farmers Karissa and Region Lewis, the video shows how this powerhouse couple went from growing weed to growing organic tomatoes to growing something bigger than they ever imagined…

Released this week in honor of 4/20 and Earth Day (two holidays important in their own right), “The Gateway Plant” provides a unique glimpse into MG’s theory of resilience-based organizing. We know that when people work together to directly meet their needs through shared work, democratic self-governance, and confronting unjust policies, they build a critical foundation for ecological restoration and self-determination.

“Our farm is about community resilience and black liberation,” said Karissa Lewis, one of the Full Harvest co-founders. “Whether we’re dealing with gentrification or food deserts or racist policing, in America it always comes down to land and power. So we’re taking the land back. And that way, we can start to take our power back as a community.”

Produced by our own Josh Healey and directed by Yvan Iturriaga, “The Gateway Plant” is the newest video in MG’s Green Collar Comedy video series. Combining subversive humor and grassroots activism, these videos break through the dominant narratives on issues of race, class, and ecology. Which is exactly what Full Harvest Farm is doing.

“This is about revolutionizing the way we organize and the way we live,” said Josh Healey. “Art and activism, resistance and resilience — they go together like weed and munchies. And if there’s one thing I learned at Full Harvest Farm, it’s that sometimes the biggest changes can start with just one little bud.”
