In Sept and Oct 2012, grassroots organizers, cultural workers, and other activists traveled to the Occidental Arts & Ecology Center for MG’s flagship retreats:Freedom Fighting While Defending the Earth. Spanning over two weekends, this intensive retreat series orients movement organizers and activists to the current state of the ecological crisis, and then creates a strategy space to collectively build solutions and strategies toward eco justice. Since the inaugural retreats in 2007, MG has graduated over 140 participants from across the country.
This year’s strategy sessions had a particular focus on what MG names “Shocks, Slides and Shifts” – a framework for thinking about how we are harnessing the slides and shocks of the current economic and ecological collapse (such as SHOCKS like Superstorm Sandy and SLIDES like rising sea levels), towards the SHIFTS that we want to manifest in building towards real solutions on the ground and in policy.
This year’s retreat participants brought an incredible depth of experience, visionary thinking, and raw creativity – making for a transformative and momentous 2012 retreat! Shout outs to all of the 2012 retreat participants. We look forward to fostering the solutions that were envisioned, and continuing to build relationships (even across states).
Keep an ear out for MG’s 2013 retreat series announcements – to come in the near future!
