Movement Generation’s Earth Skills is a seasonal training program of interactive, land-based workshops. They are designed to help us restore and manage our relationship to our own work and to the resources that meet our basic needs. We see this as a critical part of building resilience in marginalized communities. Organizers, community members and all participants gain practical skills that both help communities weather the impacts of the ecological crises, lighten our collective footprint on the planet, and practice managing our resources without government or corporate oversight so that we can ensure equity. We aim to cultivate these skills in organized communities that want to build power by creating community controlled economies.

Past Earth Skills trainings include:

  • Urban Composting & Soil Preparation
  • Rooftop Gardens & Working with Medicinal Plants and Herbs
  • Rainwater Harvesting – Installing Rainwater Catchment Systems
  • Direct Action Resilience
  • Restoring Health, Childbirth, & Independence from Industrial Medicine
  • Water-less Compost Toilets

In addition to Earth Skills, every few years we host Permaculture for the People (P4P) with the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center. Learn more about the program in this 2015 Permaculture for the People video from Friends of MVMT Films on Vimeo.

Below are some diagrams from the 2015 P4P featured in the video above. These show the plans for different land, farm, and garden spaces that were developed in the P4P course. Since 2015 these plans have 5become realities across the Bay Area, shaping land to serve the people.
